Gloucester County VA in June

June 2015: This is an exciting month in Gloucester County as we celebrate the graduating class of 2015 and the end of a successful school year for all of our students in the county, private and home schools. Let the summer vacation good times begin!

It is also the busiest time of year for our local businesses involved in outdoor activities and tourist related products and services. Have a great season!

Groups like The Fairfield Foundation will be busy this month with a planned Archaeology Day Camp for kids to be held at St. James Episcopal Church . Gloucester Arts on Main has many wonderful classes planned for the summer and you'll want to register for those early before they fill up! There are benefits for good causes this month, classes at the library and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, and outdoor adventures at Beaverdam Park. You won't get bored in Gloucester County this month!

Dr. Edith Widder, leader of the first expedition to film the giant squid Architeuthis, describes her unique approach to capturing live footage of this elusive deep-sea predator. Widder, an expert in bioluminescence and founder of the Ocean Research & Conservation Association, has made more than 250 dives in submersibles, with coverage by BBC, PBS, Discovery, and National Geographic.

The lecture is the June installment of the 2015 After Hours series, which helps mark VIMS’ 75th anniversary with presentations following the “Then, Now, and Next” theme of our year-long celebration.

Collecting and observing debris and artifacts from sunken ships and naval battlefields helps Americans learn more about our past. In addition, divers have observed firsthand the ecological role that shipwrecks can play as an artificial reef habitat, supporting biodiversity usually found only on live coral reefs. Join guest speaker Shannon Ricles of NOAA as she describes the history of the National Marine Sanctuary System, explains why NOAA has recently included several shipwrecks in the program, and explains how shipwrecks can be useful in both historical and ecological studies.

Reservations to this free public lecture series are required due to limited space. Registration for this event will open in mid-May. Call 804-684-7061 for further information.

Join VIMS Professor Rob Hale and the marine educators at the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve for the July Discovery Lab!

Marine debris is human-generated waste that has been released into the ocean either deliberately or accidentally. It has profound negative effects on marine life and human health, washing up on our beaches and congregating into huge gyres of trash in the center of each ocean. Participants in this lab will learn about the research being done to help solve the marine-debris problem, engage in hands-on activities to illustrate how marine debris can impact animals and ecosystems, and discover how we can all help to reduce marine debris in our oceans.

Its original bylaws were adopted at the December 2009 meeting of the Board of Supervisors. Comprised of citizens, staff, and a Board member, it was tasked with advising the Board of Supervisors on "green" matters including development of policies, practices, and ordinances that encourage "green" building, "green" energy generation, and to encourage a vision of sustainability that can be embraced and promoted by the whole community through meaningful and broad based citizen participation, to benefit our economy, environment, society, and future generations.
